Sofas end up on grass verges and down alleyways more than almost anything else, and it is not because people are lazy. It is because a sofa is genuinely difficult to get rid of. It will not go in a car. The council collection is currently paused. Charities will not take it without a fire label. And the tip will not accept a van.
So it sits in the hallway for three weeks and then somebody suggests a bloke with a van off Facebook, and that is how it ends up in a lay by with your name still on the delivery note stapled underneath.

Check the fire label before you write it off
If the permanent fire safety label is still attached and the sofa is in decent condition, it can be reused rather than scrapped. Several Birmingham charities take upholstered furniture and some will collect it free. That is genuinely a better outcome than paying us, and we will tell you so if we can see the label.
No label, ripped, stained, sagging or smelling of damp? It is waste. Ring us.
Getting it out of the house
The doorway is usually the problem, not the stairs. Sofas that went in fine ten years ago often will not come out because something has changed: a replacement front door with a narrower frame, a boxed in bannister, thicker carpet, a radiator moved.
We break them down on site when we have to. Feet off, frame cut, and out in pieces. It takes a bit longer and it makes a mess of the sofa, which does not matter because the sofa is going in a van either way.
Two things to tell us when you ring
Which floor it is on, and whether there is a lift. A sofa on the driveway is a five minute job. The same sofa in a third floor flat is not, and we would rather price it right than change the number when we arrive.
Sofa removal questions
Will a charity take my sofa instead?
Only if the fire label is still attached and intact. Since 1988 every upholstered item sold in the UK has carried a permanent fire safety label, and no reputable charity or reuse shop can legally resell one without it. Check the label under a cushion or on the base before you ring round. If it is missing or has been cut off, the sofa is waste, and that is where we come in.
It will not fit through the door. Now what?
That is a normal Tuesday for us. Most sofas that went in easily years ago will not come out because a door has been replaced, a bannister has been boxed in or the carpet has been relaid. We break them down on site, which usually means removing the feet and cutting the frame. Tell us in advance so we bring the tools.
Do I need to take the cushions off or clean it?
No. Leave it exactly as it is. There is no need to hoover it, wrap it or move it to the front.
Why does a corner sofa cost more than a two seater?
Space and weight. A corner unit can take up a third of the van on its own, and recliners are considerably heavier because of the steel mechanism inside. Both mean fewer other jobs on that run, which is what the price reflects.
What happens to it after you take it away?
It goes to a licensed transfer station where the frame, the metal and the foam are separated. Upholstered furniture is one of the harder waste streams because of the fire retardant treatments, which is exactly why it needs handling properly rather than being dumped.
Can you take a sofa bed?
Yes. Sofa beds are heavier again because of the metal frame and the mattress inside, so mention it when you ask for a price.
