Sofas, beds, mattresses, wardrobes, fridges, washing machines and old TVs. One item or a van full. Carried out from wherever it is sitting, including upstairs.
The one item everyone has
Most people ring us the first time because of a single thing. A sofa that will not fit through the new front door. A mattress leaning against the fence going green. A fridge that died a fortnight ago and is now blocking the hallway.
You do not need a full load to be worth our time. We come out for single items every day of the week, and it is a fraction of what a skip would cost you.
What we collect most
- Sofas and armchairs. Two seaters, three seaters, corner units and recliners. Recliners are heavier than they look because of the mechanism.
- Beds and mattresses. Divans, frames, headboards, single and king. Mattresses are banned from a lot of disposal routes, which is exactly why they get fly tipped so often.
- Wardrobes and drawers. Flat pack ones usually have to be broken down to get them out. We do that.
- Fridges, freezers and white goods. Washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and cookers.
- TVs and electricals. Old plasma sets, monitors, printers, microwaves.
- Carpets and flooring. Rolled or loose, plus underlay and gripper.
- Garden furniture. Rattan sets, parasols, trampolines and hot tubs. Hot tubs need warning in advance.
Why the fridge costs more than the wardrobe
Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units contain refrigerant gas and fall under the WEEE regulations. They have to be degassed at a licensed facility, which charges us per unit. That is a real cost and we would rather explain it than hide it in the total.
Same principle with mattresses and tyres. They cost more to get rid of than their size suggests. If somebody quotes you a suspiciously round number for a van full of fridges, ask them where they are going.
Upstairs, out the back, down the side
The single biggest thing that changes the price on a one item job is not the item. It is where it is. A sofa on the driveway is a two minute job. The same sofa in a back bedroom of a third floor flat with no lift is a different piece of work entirely, and pretending otherwise is how you end up with a driver renegotiating on your doorstep.
So when you message us, say where it is and whether there are stairs. We will price it properly first time.
The bit most companies never mention
Under the Environmental Protection Act you have a household duty of care for your own waste. In plain English: if you hand your rubbish to somebody who fly tips it, and the council traces it back to you, you get the fixed penalty, not them. Birmingham enforces this and has taken fly tippers to court.
So before you let anyone load a van, ask for two things. Their waste carrier registration number, which you can check free on the Environment Agency register in about thirty seconds. And a waste transfer note for your job, which is the receipt proving where your waste went.
We are a registered waste carrier and we issue a transfer note for every single job, without being asked. If you are a landlord, an agent or a business, keep it. If you are a householder, it is still worth having.
A quick sanity check
If somebody quotes you a price that seems far too good, ask where the waste is going and what the tip fees are. Tipping costs real money. A price that does not cover it usually means the load is going into a lay by somewhere, with your name still on the envelopes inside it.
Furniture and single item questions
Will you come out for just one item?
Yes. A single sofa, one mattress, one fridge. There is a minimum charge because the van still has to drive to you and the tip still charges us, but it is a lot cheaper than a full load and far cheaper than a skip.
Do you have to carry it out, or does it need to be outside?
Either. If it is already on the drive or in the front garden that is quickest and cheapest. If it is in an upstairs back bedroom, we will come and get it. Just tell us which when you ask for a price, because it changes how long the job takes.
Why do fridges and freezers cost more?
Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units contain refrigerant gases and are covered by WEEE regulations. They cannot go in with general waste, they have to be handled and degassed at a licensed facility, and that facility charges per unit. Anyone quoting you a fridge at the same price as a wardrobe is either absorbing that cost or not doing it properly.
Can you take a mattress?
Yes. Mattresses are bulky, awkward and specifically banned from a lot of disposal routes, which is why they end up fly tipped so often. We take them properly.
What about a piano?
Possible, but tell us in advance. An upright is a two person lift and a grand is a different conversation entirely. We would rather know before we arrive than find out on your doorstep.
Will you take furniture that is still good?
If it is genuinely reusable we will say so and, if you want, get it to a charity or reuse shop instead of the tip. Several Birmingham charities take furniture in good condition with fire labels intact.
