This one is genuinely regulated

Most rubbish is just rubbish. Fridges are not. Anything with a cooling circuit contains refrigerant gas, and those gases are covered by the WEEE regulations and the F-gas rules. It has to go to a licensed treatment facility where trained operators recover the gas before the unit is dismantled.

That is not optional and it is not cheap. The facility charges per unit, which is the entire reason a small fridge costs more to take away than a large wardrobe.

What it costs

  • Fridge, freezer or fridge freezer, from £45
  • American style fridge freezer, from £70
  • Washing machine, cooker or dishwasher, from £40, no special route needed
  • Kitchen full of appliances, quarter load from £120

Try the retailer first, honestly

If you are buying a replacement, ask the shop to take the old one on delivery. Retailers selling electrical goods have take back duties and it is usually free or close to it. That beats paying us and we would rather tell you than not.

The catch is the window. Once the new one is installed and the delivery driver has gone, that option is finished. If you have already missed it, ring us.

Switch it off the day before

Not essential, but it makes the day much easier. A freezer that comes straight out of service is full of ice, and that ice becomes water in the back of the van and across your hallway floor on the way out.

  1. Empty it completely the night before.
  2. Switch it off at the wall and leave the door propped open.
  3. Put an old towel underneath to catch the melt.
  4. Leave the door ajar so it does not go musty overnight.

Where it goes

To a licensed WEEE treatment facility. The refrigerant is recovered, the compressor and metals go for recycling and the insulation foam is dealt with separately. You get a waste transfer note either way, and if you are a landlord or a letting agent you should keep it.

Questions

Fridge and freezer questions

Why does a fridge cost more than a wardrobe?

Because it is legally a different kind of waste. Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units contain refrigerant gases, and under the WEEE regulations and the F-gas rules they have to be taken to a licensed facility and degassed by trained operators before anything else happens to them. That facility charges per unit. Any carrier quoting you a fridge at wardrobe money is either eating that cost or not doing it properly.

Should I defrost it first?

Yes please, if you can. A freezer that has been switched off overnight with the door open leaks water in the van and over your floor on the way out. Switch it off the day before, leave the door ajar with a towel underneath, and empty it completely.

Do you take American style fridge freezers?

Yes. They are a two person lift and they carry a higher disposal charge because of the size, so they are priced separately. Tell us it is an American style unit when you book.

Will the shop take my old one when the new one is delivered?

Often, yes, and it is usually free or nearly free. Retailers selling electrical goods have take back obligations. If you are buying a replacement, ask about it at the point of order because the window closes once the delivery is done. If you have missed it, that is where we come in.

Can you take a chest freezer from a garage?

Yes, and that is a common one. Chest freezers in garages are heavy, awkward and usually full of ice. Same advice, switch it off and let it drain the day before if you can.

What about a wine cooler or a mini fridge?

Same rules, same route. Anything with a cooling circuit falls under the same regulations regardless of size.
