Why mattresses are such a nuisance
A mattress is the perfect storm of waste. It will not fold, it will not fit in a car, it cannot be compacted, and the springs inside destroy the shredders at most recycling plants. That is why almost every disposal route either refuses them or charges extra, and why so many end up propped against a fence going green.
Right now it is worse than usual in Birmingham. The council has paused new bulky waste bookings because of the strike, and the household recycling centres are not accepting waste brought in vans. Both of the obvious free options are closed.

If you are replacing a bed, it is worth checking whether the retailer will take the old one away on delivery. Many do it free and that beats paying anybody. If they will not, or you have already missed the window, ring us.
We come and get it, you do not carry it
The whole point is that you do not have to wrestle it down two flights of stairs on your own. Leave it on the bed frame or leaning against the wall in the back bedroom. We will bring it down and out.
If you suspect bed bugs
Say so when you book. It changes nothing about whether we will take it, but we will keep it separate from the rest of the load and handle it accordingly. Bagging it before we arrive genuinely helps stop anything spreading through the rest of the house on the way out.
Where it goes
To a licensed transfer station where mattresses are separated out for processing. The springs go for metal recycling and the foam and fibre are recovered where possible. It costs more to deal with properly than to dump, which is precisely why the fly tipped ones exist.

Why will the tip not just take my mattress?
Mattresses are bulky, they cannot be compacted, and the springs wreck shredding equipment, so most disposal routes either refuse them or charge a premium. On top of that, Birmingham's household recycling centres are currently not accepting waste brought in vans because of the industrial action, so even borrowing a van does not solve it.
Do I need to wrap it?
Not for us. If you are worried about bed bugs then bagging it helps stop them spreading through the house on the way out, and it is worth telling us so we can keep it away from the rest of the load. Otherwise leave it as it is.
Can you take a divan base as well?
Yes. Divan bases, headboards, slatted frames and metal frames all go the same trip. A divan and mattress together is still usually cheaper than two separate visits.
What about a mattress that is still in good condition?
Charities almost never take used mattresses, for hygiene reasons, regardless of condition. If it genuinely is nearly new you might do better selling it, but be aware most buyers will not take a used mattress either.
How quickly can you collect?
Often the same day. A single mattress is a quick job and we can usually slot it in around a bigger booking, which is also why it is one of the cheaper things we do.
