Garden and green waste removal

The pile at the bottom of the garden

Garden waste has a way of accumulating quietly. A bit of hedge here, some turf from when you redid the border, the fence panels that came down in the storm, the shed you have been meaning to deal with since you moved in. Then one day it is a heap the size of a car and the brown bin is a joke.

We clear the whole lot in one visit. If the only route out is through the house, we bring sheets and we carry it through the house.

What we take from a garden

  • Hedge cuttings, branches, leaves and general green waste
  • Turf, topsoil and spoil from levelling work
  • Old decking, sleepers and treated timber
  • Rotten fence panels, posts and concrete gravel boards
  • Sheds, greenhouses and summer houses, dismantled on site
  • Concrete bases, slabs and broken paving
  • Rattan and garden furniture, parasols, gazebos
  • Trampolines, swing sets, playhouses and sandpits
  • Hot tubs and above ground pools, with notice
  • Bagged bark, gravel and unused aggregate

Bulky against heavy, and why it matters

Green waste is bulky. It fills a van fast but barely weighs anything. Soil, turf, concrete and slabs are the exact opposite, they take up almost no room and weigh a tonne, literally.

Those two things price completely differently. So tell us if there is soil, hardcore or a concrete base in the mix, because a photo of a garden does not show weight and we would rather quote you right than adjust on the day.

Green waste actually gets composted

Clean green waste separated from general rubbish goes for composting rather than landfill. That is one of the reasons we ask you not to mix bags of household rubbish into the garden pile. Keep them separate where you can and more of it gets recycled, which is better all round.

The bit most companies never mention

Under the Environmental Protection Act you have a household duty of care for your own waste. In plain English: if you hand your rubbish to somebody who fly tips it, and the council traces it back to you, you get the fixed penalty, not them. Birmingham enforces this and has taken fly tippers to court.

So before you let anyone load a van, ask for two things. Their waste carrier registration number, which you can check free on the Environment Agency register in about thirty seconds. And a waste transfer note for your job, which is the receipt proving where your waste went.

We are a registered waste carrier and we issue a transfer note for every single job, without being asked. If you are a landlord, an agent or a business, keep it. If you are a householder, it is still worth having.

A quick sanity check

If somebody quotes you a price that seems far too good, ask where the waste is going and what the tip fees are. Tipping costs real money. A price that does not cover it usually means the load is going into a lay by somewhere, with your name still on the envelopes inside it.

Questions

Garden waste questions

Do you do the gardening as well, or only the removal?

Removal. We are a waste carrier, not a landscaper. If your gardener has left a mountain of cuttings and no way to shift them, that is exactly our job. If you need the hedge cut in the first place, we are not the right call.

Can you take soil and turf?

Yes, but flag it up front. Soil and turf are heavy rather than bulky, so they price by weight rather than by how much space they take. A small pile of soil can weigh more than a van full of hedge cuttings.

Will you take the shed and the base too?

Yes. We dismantle the shed, load it, and can take the concrete base and slabs underneath as well. Concrete is weight, so mention it and we will price it properly.

What about a hot tub or a trampoline?

Both fine, both need warning. Hot tubs usually need dismantling and are far heavier than people expect. Trampolines come apart easily but take up a surprising amount of van.

Is this cheaper than a garden waste subscription?

Different jobs. A council brown bin subscription is for a bin's worth of clippings every fortnight, forever. We are for the one off, the day you finally cut the leylandii back and end up with a pile the size of a car.

Give us the leylandii.

And the fence panels, and the shed, and the concrete base under it.
